Used since ancient times in China, its medieval form was introduced to Europe around 1300 by Germans and Scandinavians. It gained popularity through Swiss mercenaries and was successfully employed as an infantry weapon against heavy cavalry.
Many elite troops and noble corps carried ornate versions of this weapon. Today, the Spanish Royal Guard and the Vatican Swiss Guard use it both ceremonially and for combat training. It has a wooden shaft and measures 205 cm in length.
